An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. This authorization is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport and remains valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you receive a new passport, a new eTA must be obtained.
With a valid eTA, you can travel to Canada multiple times for short stays, typically up to six months per visit. However, an eTA is not required for travel within Canada.
Please note that holding an eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada. Upon arrival, a border services officer will verify your passport and any other necessary documents.
Foreign nationals from visa-exempt countries must have an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. This requirement is specific to air travel and does not apply if arriving by land (car, bus, train) or sea (boat, including cruise ships).
Citizens from certain visa-required countries may be eligible to apply for an eTA for air travel to Canada. However, these travelers still need a visitor visa if arriving by car, bus, train, or boat.
